Palworld Breeding Guide

Breeding is the fastest route to Pals you cannot simply catch: rare variants, work-ready mounts and fighters carrying exactly the passive skills you want. This guide walks through the whole loop — farm, Cake, parents, egg — and shows how to know the child species before you commit a single Cake, using our breeding calculator built on the game's own datamined table.

What you need before breeding

  • Breeding Farm — unlocks at technology level 19 for 2 points; built from 100 Wood, 20 Stone and 50 Fiber.
  • One male and one female of the parents you plan to pair. Species can differ; gender must not.
  • Cake — one per egg. It goes in the farm's own chest, where it does not spoil.
  • Egg Incubator — an ancient technology unlock (tier 7, 1 ancient point; 10 Paldium Fragments, 30 Stone, 5 Cloth, 2 Ancient Civilization Parts).

Step 1 — Build the Breeding Farm and assign a pair

Place the Breeding Farm somewhere flat in your base and assign the two parents to it — one male, one female. They will only start once the farm's chest holds Cake, so sort the Cake supply out first. If you run several bases, keep the breeding base close to your ingredient farms; you will be hauling Cake constantly.

Step 2 — Bake Cake (the real bottleneck)

Cake is cooked at a Cooking Pot or any higher-tier stove from 5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, 7 Milk, 8 Eggs and 2 Honey. That recipe is why serious breeders build a dedicated supply chain: a Wheat Plantation plus Mill for flour, a Berry Plantation, and a Ranch staffed with Mozzarina (milk), Chikipi (eggs) and Beegarde (honey). Set that up once and Cake stops being the thing that limits your breeding.

Later in the game you will also see specialty cakes with breeding effects — a Vegetable Cake makes the pair produce two eggs instead of one, and a Special Cake raises the chance of passive skills passing down from the parents. Plain Cake is fine for everyday combos; save the fancy ones for projects where the passives matter.

Step 3 — Pick the parents (know the child in advance)

Which species hatches is not random: every parent pair maps to exactly one child. Two Pals of the same species always produce that species, and cross-species pairs follow the game's internal breeding table. Be careful with the old rule of thumb you will still find in guides — "the child is the Pal closest to the parents' average breeding power". Since the 1.0 update that formula no longer matches the real table on a large share of pairs, which is why our breeding calculator embeds the datamined result for all 41,616 unique pairs instead of approximating. Type two parents and read the child, or flip it around and list every pair that produces your target.

Three quirks worth knowing:

  • Legendaries never come from crosses. Jetragon, Paladius, Necromus, Frostallion and a handful of variant Pals only hatch from two of their own kind.
  • One pair is gender-dependent: a female Katress with a male Wixen gives Katress Ignis, while a male Katress with a female Wixen gives Wixen Noct — the only case where who is male and who is female changes the species.
  • Special combos exist. Some variants come from fixed pairs — Relaxaurus + Sparkit gives Relaxaurus Lux, Mossanda + Grizzbolt gives Mossanda Lux. The calculator lists them all.

Step 4 — Collect eggs every five minutes

With Cake in the chest and a pair assigned, the farm produces an egg roughly every five minutes of active play, consuming one Cake per egg — and the pace responds to the work-speed settings on your Monitoring Stand. Breeding does not drain the parents' sanity, so a stocked farm can run all session. Keep clearing finished eggs; a waiting egg is a paused farm.

Step 5 — Hatch eggs (and make hatching fast)

Eggs go into the Egg Incubator. Two things decide how long they take:

  • Egg size. Normal eggs hatch twelve times faster than Huge ones; Large eggs sit in between. Bigger eggs hold rarer Pals.
  • Temperature comfort. Each egg type has a preferred temperature — the incubator tells you if the egg "seems cold" or "seems hot". Matching it with a campfire, heater or cooler doubles the hatching speed at full comfort.

The base duration comes from one world setting: the egg-hatching time value, which sets the hours a Huge egg needs (smaller eggs scale down from it). On a single-player world you change it in the world settings; on a dedicated server it is PalEggDefaultHatchingTime in PalWorldSettings.ini — set it low for a breeding-friendly server, or to 0 for instant hatching. On a GGameHost Palworld server you edit it in the panel's config editor without touching files; our Palworld server guide covers the rest of the settings.

Breeding for passive skills, not just species

The species is only half the point. The child rolls its passive skills mostly from the parents' combined pool — up to four slots — and the datamined inheritance tables weight small hand-me-downs heaviest: inheriting one passive is the most likely outcome, all four the least. That asymmetry is why breeders work in chains: lock one or two good passives (Swift, Ferocious, work-speed lines) into a cheap species first, then cross toward the species you actually want, re-rolling at each step. Hidden stats (IVs) inherit too, so keep the best-rolled parents instead of the first pair you catch. And if a step refuses to line up, a Special Cake tilts the passive odds in your favour.

Run the numbers on your own server

Breeding projects are better with friends supplying Cake and catching passive donors — and on a shared world the hatch-time setting stops being a house rule and becomes server policy. A dedicated Palworld server keeps the farm running whether you are online or not, with the config editor, scheduled backups and instant setup handled for you.

Numbers in this guide were verified against the Palworld wiki (Breeding, Cake, Breeding Farm and Egg Incubator pages) and the game's datamined breeding tables (v27, July 2026) — the same data behind our calculator.
