Conan Exiles moved to Unreal Engine 5 on 5 May 2026. Funcom calls it a "Full engine upgrade to Unreal 5 with backwards compatibility with existing UE4 saves." The server download is still a single free Steam app, ID 443030, but it now carries two branches: the default Enhanced build, and conan-exiles-legacy, which Steam's app info flags as the older UE4-era build.
Decide before you order, because Enhanced launched on Steam PC. Funcom's console statement says "Console players continue to have full access to the current version, including official servers, the Bazaar, and critical bug fixes," and that "A console release hasn't been ruled out" — though Funcom wants to see how the upgrade lands and stabilise the PC experience first. So if part of your group plays on Xbox or PlayStation, they stay on that current version and cannot join an Enhanced-branch world.
The UE5 rebuild changed the memory picture; the clearest public data point is an admin's report on Funcom's own forums. Before the upgrade that server ran fine on 8 GB — roughly 5-6 GB with about five active players, and "Occasional peaks around 7 GB." Afterwards the same world "appears to need roughly 9 GB+ minimum," and the owner raised it to about 15 GB with a 12.6 GiB container limit to stop out-of-memory kills.
Treat that as one measured world, not a specification. Funcom publishes requirements for the Enhanced client — 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended — but no figure for the dedicated server. Player count is itself a server setting, and Funcom's launcher documentation notes it "has a direct impact on performance," so memory headroom decides how far you can push the slots.
Steam Workshop is still the delivery route, but the engine change is not free for mod authors. Funcom's Enhanced notes state that "Mods can be brought over from UE4/Legacy, and will require upgrading, recooking, and repackaging for UE5/Enhanced." Funcom's issues list adds that "many of the mods are not yet compatible with the new version," and points to a Legacy/Enhanced version filter in the Workshop for checking a given item. Where something you depend on has not been reworked, the Legacy branch still serves the build it was packaged against.
